Frequent use of social media can have negative consequences for adolescents' mental health, including increased anxiety and depressive symptoms.

METHODS

a. Participants

i. Middle school (six, seventh, eighth grades)

ii. participants age from 11-14

iii. A total of 150 students participated in the research study with 50 students from each

grade (Randomly Selected, Parental Informed Consent)

b. Procedures

i. The participants used a computerized social networking and media platform such as

Youtube, Tik Tok, Facebook, and Twitter for six months. Participants were given a list of mates, all

of whom would be run by a computer. Simultaneously, being observed to see how they

communicated with the "friends" and how their actions and attitudes changed as various types of

"friends" were added. Before using the media platform, participants will fill out a questionnaire

that will measure their mental health, specifically anxiety and depression levels, and then again

after six months of use.
