The effectiveness of fear as a change agent has been contested; some claim it may motivate compliance (Kotter, 2012), while others claim it might have unfavourable effects including lowering staff morale and productivity (Nelson & Quick, 2013). While fear may be a potent change agent, in my opinion, it is not the best strategy for developing a productive and healthy workplace.

Since fear is a biological survival mechanism, it can indeed cause people to react strongly (Maren, 2015). Fear may be successful in the short term in getting workers to change rapidly. However, this strategy may negatively impact staff happiness, job satisfaction, and ultimately organisational success. According to research, workers who feel dread at work are more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and burnout, which can increase absenteeism and turnover (Nelson & Quick, 2013).

Transformational leadership, which emphasises inspiration, trust, and support rather than fear and compulsion, is a more successful method of managing change (Bass et a, 2006). By cultivating a feeling of ownership, developing a shared vision, and offering possibilities for both personal and professional growth, transformational leaders encourage their followers to accept change. Higher levels of employee engagement, contentment, and performance have been demonstrated to arise from this strategy (Judge & Piccolo, 2004).

Hammering the last nail, while fear may be a potent change agent in the short term, it is not the best strategy for bringing about long-lasting, sustainable change. Organisations should instead concentrate on creating a nurturing and empowered atmosphere that motivates staff to eagerly accept change.
