Implicit biases in the judicial system continue to disproportionately affect persons of color, leading to harsher penalties and greater incarceration rates. It was very surprising for me to read about these unfortunate matters as I expected more out of the United States. The system often resorts to a vengeful approach to carry out rigorous punishment and make offenders "pay for their misdeeds" rather than adopting a restorative approach that incorporates learning, empathy, voice, and support.
