Case: Edward has recently taken a job as an interior design architect at a large and well-known international interior design firm, Dazzling Designs. He was unable to find work for the first year after graduating, and was very relieved to get this job, as his wife recently gave birth to their first child, and he needs to provide for them, as well as to pay his student loans. He was told when he was hired that he was selected not only for his academic qualifications, but because the employees who interviewed him felt that he was a good guy. He was told that each branch of Dazzling Designs liked to think of itself as a family, and that the firm placed a very high value on collegiality, After working at Dazzling Designs for some time, Edward was surprised to learn that a number of the firm's interior design architects (mostly males) regularly went on outings to baseball games, where they were given private viewing booths and unlimited food and beverages, and were waited upon by attractive, scantily dressed young women. These booths were hosted and paid for by one of the largest contractors in the country, Comprehensive Contractors, which provided a majority of the material, labor and equipment needed for interior design projects completed by Dazzling Designs. These outings were said to last about two hours and to cost about $8,000 each. When Edward asked his colleagues about this practice, he was told that such outings were legal and considered normal business practice in the country; that this was just a part of doing business; and that it was important both to keep the morale (spirits) of key employees high, and to solidify the relationship between Comprehensive Contractors and Dazzling Designs. Edward was reminded that it was Comprehensive Contractors, not Dazzling Designs, that hosted these outings, and that the interior design architects were only guests. However, Edward knew that interior design firms often selected the contractor for their projects based on the recommendation of their interior design architects, and he wondered about the objectivity of those interior design architects involved in these outings when making decisions about which contractor to use for their next project. Furthermore, at some level, the expense of these outings would have to be incorporated into the prices Comprehensive Contractors quoted, and would have to be built into the bills of Dazzling Designs' clients.
