Question:
Being in leadership on and off for the last 20 years, I can definitely see a shift as it relates to the work force. Things that baby boomers and Gen X employees values is not the same for our millennials today.
- Understand who they are - take the time to build rapport and maintain it throughout their career; Connect with them on a more personal level. This will allow trust to grow and flourish.
- Help them learn and develop in a way that works for their learning style - using personality tests may help with this
- Make them part of a team - this gives them a sense that they belong and can make a difference
- Incorporate some aspect of technology into their everyday living - Most were born into the technology world; Video chats is one of the best tools, especially, from a Work From Home environment
- Offer flexibility - work/life balance is important; Flexibility with schedules is huge for millennials as they value family and social life more than anything.
In my opinion, we need to do our best to partner more with our millennials and view them as equals more so than our enemies. They bring life, new and innovative ideas that this world really needs today.
