Below is information on how to choose, attend, and write about the Cultural Encounter you are required to attend. Please pay close attention to the guidelines for choosing, attending, formatting, and writing your report. ASSIGNMENT: . For the arts encounter you will be writing a paper that is at least two (2) pages long. The purpose of this assignment is to experience art, music, drama, and/or architecture, describe the encounter and your response to it, and connect the experience to our course material. . Your audience is anyone who might be interested in the subject, but may not have experienced it themselves, or may not have thought about it in a systematic way. Enlighten readers on your personal viewpoint/experience! . As you respond to the encounter, you will need to support your evaluation with specific examples/details about your encounter. Try to help the reader experience it with you. . You may present a judgment on the encounter and sway your reader to your view on the experience. You may wish to convince them to go or not go to this performance/film/concert/etc. . If you would like to include links or graphics in your document, please feel free to do so. BASIC INFORMATION: . It is the belief of the DMACC HUM 116 faculty that artistic expressions are best experienced in person. Therefore, this course requires students to do an arts encounter (options listed below). This encounter should be outside your regular realm of experiences: that means no popular concerts or mainstream films, for example. Choose experiences that push your experiences with art and the humanities. . Participation in the arts encounter needs to be documented by a minimum of two (2) pages of analysis/response of the arts encounter. You will have two of these encounters to complete this term, both mid-way through and by the end of the course.ARTS ENCOUNTER OPTIONS: . Attend a live theatrical performance in a community theatre, college theatre, concert, or dinner theatre. For example, you may attend a performance at the Des Moines Civic Center, CY Stephens Auditorium, Des Moines Community Playhouse, Drama Workshop, Ingersoll Dinner Theatre, Stage West, Boone Community Theatre, Newton Community Theatre, Marshalltown Community Theatre, Carroll Community Theatre, Nevada Community Theatre, or Ft. Dodge Community Theatre. Many of DMACC's theatrical performances are free with a student ID. . Attend a live dance performance by a professional dance troupe and do an analysis/response. For example, there may be dance performances scheduled at the Des Moines Civic Center or CY Stephens Auditorium. Regular dance recitals need prior approval from your instructor. . Visit an art center and do an analysis/response of two (2) or three (3) paintings, sculptures, prints, and/or photographs. For example, the Des Moines Art Center, the Ankeny Art Center, The Polk County Heritage Gallery (Des Moines) the Octagon (Ames), the Scheimann Art Gallery (Ames), or the Blanden Art Center (Ft. Dodge). Consult with me for other options in your geographic area. . Attend a culturally significant film. The Fleur in Des Moines often shows wonderful independent films. Contact me before choosing this option. . Visit an architecturally significant building and do an analysis/response. For example, you may visit the State Capitol, the Des Moines Art Center, Erickson Public Library, Terrace Hill, or the Salisbury House. Feel free to consult with me for other options in your geographic area. . Attend either a vocal or instrumental music concert or do an analysis/response of one (1) to two (2) pieces of music performed at the concert. Mainstream pop/country concerts are not appropriate for this assignment.WRITING YOUR ARTS ENCOUNTER: . Plan! Choose your cultural encounter and attend it within enough time to write your report. . Make sure you state the type of arts/cultural encounter that you engaged in (watched dance, viewed paintings, etc.), the location of this encounter, and the date, so that your reader is grounded and understands the subject about which they are reading. . At some point, you should include a brief summary of the encounter. This does not mean you need to detail every aspect of the experience; just give us a general idea so that when you refer to something in your writing, your readers will understand your reference. QUESTIONS TO ADDRESS IN YOUR REPORT: After attending the cultural/arts encounter, please incorporate the answers to the following questions in your response.
