An effective international project manager needs to be aware of cultural differences regarding leadership and motivation. He or she must be able to adapt his or her leadership style to meet the expectations of the followers. Globally, a so-called value based or transformational leader is most accepted. An international project manager needs to lead in a context of geographical, temporal, cultural, and organizational dispersion. Apart from a global organizing expertise, technical skills, cross-cultural skills and global communication literacy, he or she should have such traits and behaviours as adaptability, authenticity, empathy, enthusiasm, context- and culture- sensitivity, courage, initiative and innovativeness, personal stability, open- mindedness, patience and persistence, and respect. The international project manager is responsible for staffing the project, involving all the stakeholders at an early stage, conducting team-building sessions, assessing training needs, providing context, organizing for success, continuously clarifying the project mission and scope, fostering a culture of open-mindedness and improvement, building and maintaining commitment, and ensuring effective communication. Building the international team at the project start is crucial. The project manager has to prepare the first team meeting thoroughly, interviewing key players, building trust, and allowing for an interpersonal and intercultural exchange.
