(For example, although an accounting student may not be pursuing an IT career, he/she may choose to pursue a minor in Information Systems because of its importance in the accounting field.) o Cite at least one source that discusses which professional computing skills/disciplines are considered important for supporting your current career field. IT Careers Analysis - Investigate the IT career you have selected. o Review the Bureau of Labor Statistics Data for these careers (Go to www.bls.gov and select the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the Publications tab and choose the Computer and Information Technology category). Review the job descriptions and projections data for the different computing-related disciplines. Create the Quick Facts Table (appears for each Occupation in BLS) Median Pay, Entry-level Education, Required Work Experience in a Related Occupation, On-the-job Training, Number of Jobs, Job Outlook, and Employment Change. Include a table title, column headings and row labels. Format the table using an appropriate table style to display a professional appearance. Computing-related Academic Programs - Two-year and four-year colleges and universities generally offer three different degrees to prepare students for IT careers. Fairmont State University offers degrees in Computer Science and Information Systems Management and Pierpont Community & Technical College offers a degree in Information Systems Technology. Note the variety of program minors that are offered as well. o Provide a brief overview for each of the three major degree programs based upon your review of the catalog and/or department websites and describe how the focus of each program aligns with the realms of IT. o Describe a potential plan for developing your own computing skills to support your major through any of these computing majors, minors, or elective classes. (In other words, what type of technology education might benefit you in your intended career? You may want to consider an elective class in web development as a marketing major, or a minor in Information Systems Management in one of the specific tracks. Did you know as a student in the School of Business you need to take only three additional classes to earn an ISM minor? Check out the catalog requirements!) Professional Networking through Student Organizations - professional organizations, such as those listed in Figure 11 on page 403, provide an excellent means for networking and provide valuable information about the IT field through career resources, newsletters and publications, libraries, professional development activities, national conferences, online networking, etc. These organizations often have local student chapters with reduced membership rates. List and briefly describe at least two local computing-related student organizations at Fairmont State University and/or Pierpont Community and Technical College. Identify the affiliated professional organization, as appropriate. Bibliography - generate the bibliography of sources cited in this report using Word. Use APA 5th edition for formatting the bibliography. Remember to cite all sources, as appropriate, in the text. Appendix A - Resume o Create your own resume using a Microsoft Word template.
