At this phase, known as the separation too, two distillation columns are applied to separate the desired product (Acetone) from the byproduct (Hydrogen), the unreacted components (IPA), and the absorbent (Water). As you can see in Fig. 1, the first column (C-1), known as the Acetone column, is placed for the following reasons:
To remove light impurities
To prepare the Acetone product as pure as possible
To recycle unreacted components
While Acetone is going out from the top, the bottom product of the column which is rich in water and IPA is proceeding to be separated in the second column (C-2), known as the Water column. This column is in favor to recycle the unreacted IPA to enhance the IPA conversion. To start with, consider the exit flow of the Flash tank shown in Fig. 1 is coming into the Acetone column with the composition shown in Table. 1.
