Building Site 2: 106 W 5th St Metropolis, Illinois 62960. See Figure 1.
Building Code: 2018 IBC / ASCE 7-16/ AISC Steel Construction Manual 15 th Ed.
Steel Framed Building. Concrete roof and floor slabs.
Building Use Typical office building
Proposed Lateral Load-Resisting System: Steel special concentrically braced frames
Soil Type D
Dead Loads:
Roof Dead Load: 45 psf (including the roof equipment but not including the faade)
Floor Dead Load: 85 psf (including all partitions and equipment but not including the faade)
Exterior Faade: 12 pounds per square foot of exterior surface area
Live Loads:
Roof: 20 psf live load
Typical Floors 85 psf live load
Consider Dead, Live, Snow, Wind and Seismic Loads for the design of all elements unless noted
otherwise
Determine the following:
1. The wind loads acting on the building in both the N-S and E-W directions
2. The seismic forces at each level in both the N-S and E-W directions
3. Design the roof beam, B1
4. Design the floor beam, B1
5. Design the roof girder, G1
6. Design the floor girder, G1
7. Design the concentric bracing at elevation A-A (blue location / chevron).
Check both wind and seismic loads. Design both the typical bracing member and a typical
connection to the beam and a typical connection to the column.
8. Design the concentric bracing at elevation B-B (red location / the X bracing is connected where the
members intersect assume lateral bracing so L eff -0.75L where L is the brace length) Check both
wind and seismic loads. Design both a typical bracing member and a typical connection at the
beam-column joint.
9. Design column C1.
10. Determine the compression at the base of the column where it bears upon a concrete footing.
11. Design the column base plate and the connection of the column to the concrete footing below. Use
fc of 4,000 psi for the concrete footing. Rebar is fy=60 ksi.
12. Design a typical foundation (spread footing) under column C1. Provide a sketch(s) that shows the
geometry of the concrete footing, the steel reinforcement of the concrete footing and the
connection of the column/base plate to the footing. Soil bearing pressure is 4,000 psf. CVNG 4930/5930
