Business intelligence evolved from decision support systems that were used years ago. Early decision support systems coupled the intellectual resources of individuals with the capabilities of the computer to improve the quality of decisions. BI systems then evolved into Executive Information System that were designed strictly for the high level executives of a company. Todays BI systems are available for everyone with an interest. In addition they are enhanced with additional visualizations, alerts, and performance measurement capabilities. The actual term Business Intelligence is an umbrella term that combines architectures, tools, databases, analytical tools, applications, and methodologies and can mean different things to different people. Its major objective is to enable easy access to data (and models) to provide business managers with the ability to conduct analysis that can be used to make strategic decisions about their business. What makes this form of BI easier to use than the earlier decision support?
