BUSM 30002 D (Winter 2024)| Global Business Environment
International Business Report Assignment
Marketing
The paper is to compare two Canadian mining companies (Barrick Gold versus Ivanhoe Mines)
whose headquarters are in Canada, and have operations situated on two different continents
(Barrick Gold in South America and Ivanhoe Mines in Africa). You are to identify three issues
related to each mining companys presence in a foreign country that impact that firms brand
image and then discuss how you would you address the issues, either supporting what they are
already currently doing, or suggesting defensible changes.
The purpose of such a paper is to give you an opportunity to practice a more granular
assessment of an industry by comparing two different companies in two different geographic
areas and with a very high probability that different branding issues will be identified. Too often in
brand analysis the effort is to look at a given company using macro level industry benchmarks.
Doesnt work in real life! One has to get very detailed at the company level so that the brand
issues and response to such are tailored to the companys unique situation.
