The contractor was asked to perform some extra work on a project (The owner
and contractor could not agree on a lump sum price to complete the work). This
work consisted of excavating a trench 750' in length, 30'' in width and at a depth
of 2 metres with a Kubota 080 excavator (9 ton machine). The trench was then to
have a 6" Big O installed in the one corner at the bottom of the trench and
covered with 1.5' of sand. Round trip to the pit where the sand is 1.15 hours and
it takes 15 minutes to get the load on. The sand costs $5.50m3. A nylon rope is
to be installed in the Big O so they can pull the electrical wire and 1" poly pipe to
the well. This work was missed in the original contract. The connection at the
well and all components in the well were covered in the original contract. The
local plumber is union and the prime contractor is nonunion. The plumber has to
lay the pipe and place the rope in the Big O, supply and install the electric wiring &
pipe for the 34 hp submersible pump that will be going in the well. The plumber
also has to cover the Big O in the trench with the sand. It took the plumber (1-
$75.00hr) and his crew (4 members - to junior plumbers at $55.00hr and two
labours at $21.00hr)12 hours to complete their associated work (The union
agreement says they only have to work 10 hrs/day). They used a Case 580
backhoe to move the sand over to the trench, which was working for 5 hrs, and
was on standby for 3 hrs. The prime contractor had a tandem dump truck (diesel)
that he used to get the sand from the pit which took three trips.
The plumber has a mobilization/demobilization charge of $2000.00 on top
standard billing rates.
The prime contractor, had three labours at $27.50hr, operators are charged out
at $35.00hr.,1- Supervisor/Foreman at $65.00hr...........................in one piece of paper give me the total dollar value for the plumber work and the total value for the prime contractors work.
