Reverse Outline Worksheet

A reverse outline is a map of a paper-in-process made by labeling/summarizing each paragraph into a single sentence. When you're writing, you are always zooming in to work to notice all the details sentences, words, and punctuation. It's easy to lose sight of the argument as a whole. A reverse outline enables you to zoom out, like a painter stepping back from a large canvas to see the big picture.

How to reverse outline:

1. Number each paragraph in your revised argumentative/original essay.
2. On a separate sheet (provided), thesis or major claim at the top of the page, and number the columns on the left side of the paper.
3. For each paragraph in your draft, ask "what is this paragraph about?"/"what argument is this paragraph making?"and"how does this argument relate to my thesis?" write the answers beside the number on the separate sheet.
4. When you're done, you have an outline of the paper!

Why is a reverse outline useful?

1. The process of reverse outlining tells you if your paragraphs are unified and developed.
2. If you have trouble summarizing a paragraph in one sentence or less, you probably have too many ideas in the paragraph. In such cases, break up the paragraph into two or three separate paragraphs, or get rid of the unnecessary material.
3. If your summary is the same length as the paragraph, the paragraph is probably underdeveloped. Either develop the ideas further or consider whether that idea belongs to an earlier or later paragraph.
4. If you can take the first sentence of the paragraph and put it into your outline, you're making excellent use of topic sentences, and your writing is probably already clear and structured.
5. Review your summaries. Would your paper be clearer if the summary was at the beginning of the paragraph? i.e., use the summaries to create topic sentences
6. An outline is a summary of your argument, which you can use to analyze, develop, and if necessary, improve your argument.
7. Does each paragraph support or clearly relate to your thesis or main claim?
8. Read your outline out loud. Does each paragraph follow logically or does it seem to lack flow and coherence?
9. Look for repetition or paragraphs that seem to be discussing the same topic/sub-argument. In such cases, consider amalgamating the paragraphs.
10. any paragraphs seem unrelated to other body paragraphs and/or your thesis? Consider removing irrelevant information to make room for more productive analysis.
11. Are there holes in your argument (key words in your claim/thesis that don't appear in the outline)? Perhaps you need to add more ideas, or revise your claim.
