this is the case

ABC is a telecommunications company and Internet Service Provider (ISP) based in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Its product portfolio includes IPLCs, dedicated connections, residential lines and more. ABC mainly operates in the Business-to-Business Market, inside the kingdom and globally.

Most of the income for this company comes from the Global Market, but since it is a Bahraini company, the CEO, Mr. Ahmed wanted to establish a presence in the country by providing services to companies and residents in Bahrain. He built the company from the ground up and has been very successful at doing so.

ABCs main rival in the local market is HIJ has recently been poaching ABCs customers by promising better service at a lower price. The CEO learned of this and wanted to retaliate, and immediately had a meeting with the HR Manager, Mr. Abdulla. The CEO had requested from the HR manager to hire a new sales team that could help get back the customers they are losing, and after some thought said, they poach our customers, we will poach their sales team!!. The HR manager didnt like the idea of poaching a sales team, but the CEO insisted; the HR manager obliged.

Later that afternoon, the HR manager had a meeting with his team to give them further instructions on the new recruitment project that they were supposed to undertake. He gave them the following information: -

We need to hire a new sales team in addition to the existing ones
We are targeting the 12 Sales team members from HIJ company.
o We want to have team join us by the end of the quarter.
We have an open budget to hire them at any salary they wish, however, the higher the salary, the higher the Sales Target.
o Sales target formula will be provided by the end of the week.
We need them to join as quickly and at any cost so you dont need to take the interviews so seriously.

The HR team had 2 members, Jasim and Maryam, both very talented recruiters and they loved their jobs, and had so many concerns. During the meeting, they were told that the orders came directly from the CEO, and they had to do as they were told and that there was no law that was being broken by recruiting the team from their rival.

Maryam and Jasim had been working on an employee engagement project to help increase employee morale. Maryam thought to herself, this would demotivate the current employees. The salary difference alone will create an issue, not to mention there are no guarantees that they will perform well against their new targets. It would also be an expensive strategy, especially if it fails! She felt like she was participating in something that may impact peoples lives personally and professionally. She spoke to her colleague about it and his response was this is just our job, and we should do it anyway... its his company.

Maryam still felt this wasnt right and thought this will have bad consequences against the company. She has been working there for 5 years and didnt want to see it fall apart because of an irrational decision that her boss made and in her role as HR officer, she felt that people needed to trust her. She did not understand why her manager would agree to such a devious plan. But she also, did not like that they were losing customers and can somewhat understand the CEOs reaction. In her mind she thought there was no documentation from the CEO either, she could end up getting blamed if things went wrong.
