Is it realistic to think you can eliminate gang activity inside your prison walls?

It is not realistic to believe we can eliminate gang activity inside our prisons. Many offenders were part of gangs outside of prison and simply continue that lifestyle while incarcerated. Prisons are a large recruiting too for gangs as they offer the sense of security and power as well as benefits such as contraband and other benefits of misconduct and crime within the facility.

I do believe that gang activity can be reduced in the prison through segregation of gang elements in restrictive housing units as well as rehabilitation programs and strict enforcement of facility rules and policies to lessen the impact of the contraband trade and fights that appeal to prisoners joining gangs within the prison.

I believe if there are opportunities to rehabilitate the prisoners and provide benefits and opportunities to incentivize good behavior and change and discourage them from feeling the need or appeal to join a gang.

In your opinion is the best policy to house specific gang members together? Or, should inmates belonging to different gangs be integrated throughout the prison?

According to the national institute of justice an overwhelming number of corrections officials endorse the use of restrictive housing units to prevent and minimize prison gang activity in prisons and jails across the United States. Out of 37 gang experts within the prison system surveyed, 94 percent reported that restrictive housing was very effective or somewhat effective in reducing gang problems within the prisons. Many wardens, over 83 percent in fact reported the use of restrictive housing of gang leaders severely limited the problems the gangs within their prison caused (Pyrooz, 2018).
