Can you help me with my creative writing assignment?

You're doing a creative writing assignment, imagining you'll have to rebuild your society. Post five paragraphs in your initial post covering the following:

Step #1- Imagine you are creating a post-apocalyptic society. There are no social services, and readily available resources are hard to come by. You and a small group have been fortunate enough to survive the apocalypse and are fairly well stocked. - What do you do? Using our foundations in ethical formation class, decide what your new society 4C's (creed, code, cult, community)? thinks is the ultimate meaning of life and how to live accordingly. What are your Describe your belief system in paragraph 1.

Step #2- Based on your ultimate meaning of life, decide who is, and who is not entitled to the rights of personhood in your group. Exactly what rights do those with personhood have? What can those without personhood do?

Is there a form of currency or property?

Describe members' rights in paragraph 2.

Step #3- Choose any one of the philosophers we've discussed throughout the course and apply their views to your new society.

Is your society generally altruistic/egoistic, deontological/utilitarian, reasoned or emotional, somewhere in between? Whose philosophy would most closely match your new society's? Use paragraph 3 to answer.

Step #4- DESTROY YOUR ETHIC! What would be the ultimate threat to your society? What would destroy its ethical soul? What could possibly be put in place to prevent this scenario from occurring?

Make sure that whatever tactics you use to prevent destruction don't violate the ethic you began with. In that way, you would completely destroy yourself!

Describe the threat to your society and your counter-tactic in paragraph 4.

Step #5- Your social legacy must live on! What stories would your society pass on to coming generations? How will these stories be taught (hard/soft universalism, relativism, nihilism/skepticism, etc)?

What lessons can it instill for the future? How will your ethics be taught? Provide your answer in paragraph 5.

Requirements: While you don't need to footnote, I will be looking for at least three resources in your original post. These can be from in class (powerpoints, links & discussions) or outside sources (books, articles, websites). Please list your resources at the end of your post. Your original ethical design should address the following:

  • I align most closely with Ethical Egoism in my approach to ethical decision-making. I believe that prioritizing my own well-being and interests leads to the best outcomes for myself and, often, for those around me. However, this approach can be tested in situations where my interests conflict with the needs of others. For instance, in a team setting, I must balance my desire for personal recognition with the group's success. In such cases, I aim to find a compromise that respects both my goals and the collective good.

  • Information for paragraph fourth - National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research, "The Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research," Government Report, 18, April 1979,https://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED183582 - This article underscores the importance of medical ethics, as outlined in the Belmont Report, a foundational document for ethical research involving human participants. It identifies three essential principles: beneficence, justice, and respect for persons. Beneficence mandates that research should maximize benefits while minimizing potential harm to participants. Justice ensures a fair distribution of research benefits and burdens, preventing any group from being unfairly disadvantaged or excluded from potential advantages. Emphasizing respect for individuals highlights the importance of informed consent, recognizing each person's autonomy and the right to make decisions about their involvement in the research. These principles guide researchers in conducting studies that advance scientific knowledge and prioritize the dignity and welfare of participants. By committing to these ethical standards, researchers can foster public trust and uphold integrity within the scientific community.
