Written Assignment 2 - required of everyone: Mental illness has many dimensions. Among them is the notion of stigma. In fact, that stigma and social knowledge of that stigma are often used by governments to control human behavior. Totalitarian regimes, especially, such as the one in the former Soviet Union (presently, also in China and N. Korea), classifying political deviants as mentally ill and placing them in forced labor camps, known as Gulags, was common. Please discuss this form of classification and please examine why a government would resort to that type of classification. What are the repercussions of such classification? What theories of social control would apply in this case? Before answering this question, you must do research on Gulags. Consider this question as a multi-dimensional analysis of political and ethical systems. Think about repercussions for democracies.
