Student discussion post-

1.An example of a state of anomie would be areas that were affected by the terrorist attack during the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York City.During this time, areas in close proximation to the World Trade Center were demolished and in complete havoc and people were scared and angry and this led to looting of stores and businesses.Looting during this time shows that social morals and standards were broken. There was no police enforcement, no rules to follow.Society was breaking down.People were in a panic.Deviant acts were being committed all over the city.

2.Merton's five adaptations to anomie are conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion. Conformity is where the conformist wants to achieve a goal of success and wealth and obtain this success through legitimate and lawful means. A student may be a conformist because they are working hard to earn a degree to get a better job and be successful. They are working on their goal by a lawful and legitimate way of attending and participating in school.Innovation is slightly different from conformity as the subject wants the goal of success and wealth but try to obtain this by illegitimate means.A drug dealer would be an example as they want to be successful but try to obtain the goal of wealth by becoming a drug dealer which is illegal.Ritualism is when people abandon the goal of success and wealth but continue to make a living legitimately.A worker who may never get promoted is an example of ritualism.Retreatism are those who have rejected the goal of success and wealth and reject the lawful means.A homeless person would be an example of retreatism. Rebellion is considered the category for deviants. They reject the rules but try to change the system with their own rules. An example would be a terrorist group as they reject the goal of success and replace it with another goal. They may use whatever means necessary to obtain their specific goal.

3.Utilizing Cloward and Ohlin's ideas on delinquency and opportunity, I feel that community focused programs such as youth centers could be an essential place for children and young adults to go for assistance. There are youth centers and community programs already in place in areas throughout the United States.I feel if we incorporate spirituality, cultural values, gardening, cooking, sports, and reading and writing classes, that we can improve the quality of education, healing, and rehabilitation at the centers.Being Native American, our youth center/recreation center on the reservation offer drum groups, prayer groups, dancing and singing activities, basket making and other cultural activities that bring the youth together. Youth centers also offer counseling, therapy, and mentorship.

4.Messner and Rosenfeld stated that "major institutions including the family, school, and political systems are all dominated by economic institutions" (Inderbitzen, 2020, p. 148.)Pursuing monetary success and wealth is valued more in the United States than noneconomic goals and this can weaken institutions like family and schools. There is an imbalance of culture and economic success in the United States. I do feel this is true.We are led to believe that we can all achieve the "American Dream" but without the legitimate means to do so, individuals may turn to deviant behavior and crime. We all may pursue the goal of monetary gain and wealth and success, but with the emphasis being on monetary value over everything else and without a legitimate way to attain these goals, the strain of going without causes crime rates to increase. For example, if school funding is aimed with a higher emphasis on preparing for college, focusing on career-oriented education and scoring high on academic testing, other studies such as music and arts, are considered less important creating the imbalance between students. This can lead to a sense of not belonging and result in students engaging in deviant behavior such as bullying. On the other side of this, students who are trying to attain these high standards of economic success may feel that the pressure is so high they end up cheating.

5.Robert Agnew's General Strain Theory states that individuals are pressured into crime and deviance.I feel this can be true for some individuals, but not true for others. There is pressure in the United States to attain wealth and success. For some individuals, the pressure is so high that they turn to illegitimate and deviant behavior, rebelling so to speak.I feel certain negative circumstances happen to each of us in our life, but I feel we can control how we react and not engage in this behavior. We all come from different walks of life. Depending on where you are or how you are raised, can make a huge impact on how we react to certain pressures.I have many examples of being faced with a negative relationship or situations.I did not turn to deviant behavior because I have gained tools and knowledge throughout my life that I use to control my reaction to negative situations.Controlling how we act in a certain negative incident or relationship is the key to leading a positive life.Instead of being deviant, be positive. If you emote positivity, you will receive positivity, that is my opinion.

This chapter covers anomie and strain theory. What I took from the reading is that there are social and economic strains in the United States. These strains lead can lead to an anomic state where social norms and policies break down, causing deviant acts and crime. The pursuit of the "American Dream" puts enormous pressure on individuals attempting to obtain financial wealth and success leading to status frustration. There are legitimate and illegitimate means to do so.

The article by Mueller, Abrutyn, and Osborne examined Durkheim's "suicide" in the zombie apocalypse. The article covers how certain factor in an anomie state or end of the world, can lead to suicide. There are two characters used as examples from the show "The Walking Dead," Rick Grimes and Dr. Edwin Jenner.Rick Grimes had loved ones with him during the zombie apocalypse and therefore maintained control and the motivation to keep his group together and keep going.Dr. Edwin Jenner on the other hand lost all valued people in his group. He lost the sample of zombie flesh and felt there would be no cure to the zombie disease and lost his loved ones.He ends up taking his own life.I thought the article was very interesting and the use of these very known characters made the general strain theory easy to understand and relate to.Durkheim's conception of anomie is used in this article and connects to a strain theory from the reading.

The second article by Robert Agnew reviews terrorism research and points out that collective strains or "strains that are experienced by an identifiable group such as a racial, ethnic, religious, class, or political group" (Inderbitzin, 2020, p. 162) can lead to terrorism. The article focuses on the explanation of terrorism using General Strain Theory which states that strains or stressors in large magnitudes are disliked by individuals, usually sub-national groups, and create terrorism and negative emotional anomic states. The article was a good read with great insights on what causes terrorism. The article uses General Strain Theory which is covered in the reading.
