CASE STUDY: Increasing diversity in the workplace This case study is regarding the US census Burea investigation in which suggests increasing diversity in the workplace by 2016 US census has investigated that by 2016 33.33% of the total workforce in the US will e more than 50 years old. Workforce demographies are shifting due to the growing number of older employees. Entry-level workforce employment has been adversely impacted due to the rise in employment of older people thus large shift in demographics is being faced. The average age of the workforce is continuously increasing as medical science improves prolonged existence thus leading to the rapid growth of individuals over 55 years old at work. Medical breakthroughs and developments have research techniques that could increase the age of a human by more than 100 years. But with an increase in age employees face discrimination at the workplace. Organizations can develop rules to protect old employees and limit age discrimination and treat them fairly regardless of their age. Sound management practices consist of many techniques that limit age discrimination which is relevant for all employees. An increase in the number of aged employees is also the cause of family planning that encourages people to have only one child which has decreased the ratio of youngsters in the society. Clear expectations should be determined for performance for instance management should handle issues directly, clear procedures and policies should be followed consistently Concerns are raised against the increased percentage of disability in old generations the ratio of disability among employees from 45 to 54 year old is 21 percent, from 65 to 75 year old is 42 percent and it is more than 64 percent in people more than 75 years old. Insurance expenses of aging employees also increase due to the increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The first thing that needs to be answered is what changes in employment relationships are likely to occur as the population ages? As the population ages in an organization changes, hours of works should be reduced and a flexible schedule should be introduced to have a good relationship with employees. Training should tailor according to the requirements of older people. as employees age organizations can also opt for other options such as outsourcing to make jobs flexible as the workforce ages. Do you think increasing age diversity will create new challenges for managers? What types of challenges do you expect will be most profound? Management will face challenges regarding motivation as it is challenging to balance motivation in the workplace as what motivates a young person might not motivate an old person. So managers are bound to find a method to balance age diversity. Thirdly organizations can cope with differences related to age discrimination by executing strategies that provide older people with positions better suited to their abilities. The organization should search for ways to make technology more friendly for its people and enhance the workplace experience for older people. Reward system should be based on the performance of the workforce
