Career Development Plan - Conducting a Role Analysis

Assignment Context:

You have been offered a supervisory position of some type to be employed (directly) by a health care institution. The proposed salary and benefits all seem reasonable. However, you want to ensure the role aligns with your career goals. Or, in other words, does it align with your career management strategy, which means will the role bring you fulfillment in the short term and long term.

Assignment Overview:

As you begin your career journey, you must conduct an analysis to determine whether a role is a proper fit and if it will lead to career satisfaction. You do this by developing a framework that identifies the criteria for your career satisfaction. You have already created your framework your top five values and skills. Additionally, you already have a tool to conduct your assessment - the job fit evaluation tool. In addition, we have developed a list of positive and negative behaviours that can either enable or prevent career growth. Part of the analysis is to identify personal strengths and weaknesses in your behaviour to determine what could undermine your opportunities to achieve career success.

In this assignment, there are seven stages to conduct a Role Analysis.

Stage One Role Analysis

  • Source a job ad of interest (Mandatory)
    • Sourcing a job: Use an online job search tool, such as LinkedIn, Indeed, a Health Care Website (such as Kingston Health Sciences Centre), etc., to find an actual job description. Before selecting a job description, please ensure you are currently or expect to be qualified for the role upon graduating from SLC. For example, suppose you are an internationally trained dentist, and you plan to pursue your professional dentist licence in Canada, then yes. In that case, you can select a job advertisement for a dentist. Of course, if you plan to pursue a different role, please choose a job description that aligns with your career goals. Please, note my focus is to make this assignment as practical as possible. In the video explaining the assignment, please ensure you meet the stated requirements and qualifications when selecting a job description.
    • Please include a copy of the job description of the role you have chosen to conduct a role analysis on.
  • Create a job fit evaluation
    • Please include a copy of your completed job fit evaluation.

Stage Two Role Analysis

  • Use the Entry-Level Behaviours list created during class to:
  1. Identity which negative entry-level behaviour you are most vulnerable to / most likely to do from time to time?
  2. Acknowledging this vulnerability, devise a strategy that will make you less vulnerable to this occurring.

Complete this statement when answering describing your chosen strategy:

If I am to (insert vulnerability) less, then the strategy I must adopt is (insert strategy) because (insert outcome).

  • If you were to accept this role, identify which of the ten criteria (top 5 skills and values) will be least satisfied? What strategy could you conscientiously take at work and in your personal life (non-work life) to supplement engagement with that particular value or skill?

Stage Three Role Analysis

  • Which one of your top five skills and top five values do you most look forward to using?
  • Does the role enable you to use and demonstrate that value or skill more than past roles? (An important consideration when contemplating if a position will help enhance your career path!) Yes, no, please explain.

Stage Four Role Analysis:

  • Use the Management Behaviours List created during class to:
  1. Identity which negative management behaviour you are most vulnerable to / most likely to do from time to time?
  2. Acknowledging this vulnerability, devise a strategy that will make you less vulnerable to this occurring.

Complete this statement when answering describing your chosen strategy:

If I am to (insert vulnerability) less, then the strategy I must adopt is (insert strategy) because (insert outcome).

Stage Five Role Analysis:

  • Based on the Management Behaviours List:
  1. Which positive management behaviour do you most look forward to demonstrating?
  2. Does the position enable you to use and demonstrate that behaviour more than in past roles? (An important consideration when contemplating if a role will help enhance your career path!) Yes, no, please explain.

Stage Six Role Analysis:

  • Review the reflection statements you previously completed:

I want to be seen as

I am energized working when I get to

The people I look forward to dealing with, I can best describe as

The ONE THING my references are most likely to say about me is

  1. Do you feel the role is aligned with these statements? Why?

Stage Seven Role Analysis:

  • After conducting this analysis, do you still believe this role aligns with your career goals and would you accept or decline the job offer? Why?

Submission Format:

Submit as a written report. It must include the following items/sections:

  • Title page
  • Introduction
  • 7 Independent Sections (Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3,...)
  • Conclusion
