CASE ANALYSIS: KS Consulting Pty Ltd
KS Consulting Pty is a twoyearold wholly blackowned and controlled project
management consulting firm, based in Kloof, Durban. It has established an extensive business
network within both the public and the private sectors KS is managed by a group of young
professionals who are always seeking to improve the way in which they carry out their projects.
We are slowly getting it right and have realised that, in order to stay relevant, we need to
constantly improve the skills of our human resources and the skills of our alliance partners as
well. says Zinhle Zulu a young engineer at the company.
The company is still young, small, flexible, and dynamic but there are always times of overload
or underload when capacities are small. From their mission statement, they are clear about the
objective of the company. Their intent is to be an economically viable business that empowers
and develops members and communities by maximizing the equity base through forming
strategic alliances and maintaining high standards and values.
KS Consulting has identified various challenges facing various government departments in
South Africa today, the lack of both technical and managerial capacity that would help make
government programmes more successful. This has led to the lack of service delivery and the
low success rate of many projects in such departments.
The Companys products
The services offered by KS are designed to try and help with the abovementioned challenges,
more particularly in programme development and implementation and turnaround strategies
for SMEs and local government organisations. Training and skills development for small
businesses and the government sectors are also offered. Feasibility and business plan
development can be undertaken for both the public and private sectors Various business
support services and IT solutions can also be offered.
In reviewing what they have achieved to date the team can be proud. A development and
mentorship programme for emerging contractors was initiated with the Department of Public
Works in KwaZuluNatal. There was the development of a mall and business district in
Glebelana and the repair and renovation of provincial health facilities for the Department of
Health. Also, evaluations and land audits were done for Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and
Ntambanama Municipality respectively. A council chamber and administrative offices were
also developed for the Mandeni municipality.
As KS Consulting has grown, it has become a requirement that, on top of the continuous
development and improvement of their workforce, the systems used to manage the
organisations have become more important. Standardization of the project processes will
become the next challenge for KS In addition, quality monitoring and early correction of
errors or potential errors must be improved to help manage the risks for both kS and their
clients. We are slowly getting it right says Zinhle, but we must constantly improve the
reliability of processes within the company Top management support is crucial for this.
