CASE APPLICATION LEARNING 2. LEARNING d. Workplace Violence Several news reports described a rare but grave incident that happened in July 2010 in Egypt. At least six people were killed and six others were injured when a 53-year- old company bus driver started shooting at his fellow employees. As he was driving the bus, the driver sud- denly stopped and fired indiscriminately at all workers on the bus from a hidden automatic weapon. The reports also indicated that there had been disagreements between the driver and some of his colleagues at work, who had taunted him earlier. Other reports indicate that he suffered from depression after being transferred into a new role in the organization. The bus driver told the court that he could not remember anything about the incident and the court decided to send him to a hospital to assess his state of mental health. The company in which the above incident occurred decided to pay the sum of 100,000 Egyptian pounds to each one of the families of those who were killed in the incident and 10,000 Egyptian pounds to those who were injured While workplace violence is considered to be rare in Arab countries, many such incidents have occurred else where. In the United States, for example, it was reported that between 1992 and 2012 there were 14,470 workplace homicide victims, which averages to about 700 homi cides each year. Companies have been trying to institute policies to detect early sign of potential violence hoping to prevent such events. Chapter Thirteen Understanding Individual Behavior 337 them.
