Question:
Case study
Andres, 39, and Jada, 34, are an African American couple who have been married for eleven years. Jada was previously in a relationship and became pregnant with Noah. Noah's dad, Jim, is not involved. They broke up fifteen years ago shortly after Noah's birth. They broke up due to Jim being an alcoholic and cheating on Jada with a friend. Andres and Jada have two children: Joseph 8, and Charlotte 5. Since the children had to attend online school in 2020 and 2021, Jada works a part time job from home while the children are online for school. Furthermore, Jada has started going back to school online for her master's degree in counseling while the children are asleep. The school district recently decided to return to in-person next month and Joseph is showing signs of anxiety in relation to riding the bus again. The school is 10 miles from the house and Andres uses the family's only car.
The family attends church on Sundays. They incorporate prayer into dinner and bedtime routines. However, Andres was laid off from a high paying job in 2020 when the company collapsed. Now, Andres works two jobs and finds it hard to get Sunday mornings off.
Jada's parents divorced when she was 13 after her dad had an affair with one of his coworkers. With Andres spending more time at work, Jada is concerned that Andres is becoming more involved with his coworkers than their family. Jada has tried to bring up her concern, but Andres dismisses her concerns.
After Jada's parents' divorce, her mom would lean on her for support. Jada began to take on a caretaker role. She felt responsible for her mom's moods which made it difficult for her to have strong social relationship with other children her age. Jada has started to confide in her oldest son Noah about her concerns with Andres working too much and her suspicion of him having an affair. Noah has begun to argue with Andres.
Andres had a close relationship with his dad until his dad died from a car accident when he was 10 years old. After his father's death, he became close to his mom and siblings. Andres was the oldest sibling in his family and felt like he needed to help provide for his family. He got his first job at 14 to help his mom.
