In past several researches reported abut facial expressions-most notably psychologist Paul Ekman-have investigated whether facial expressions accurately reflect actual emotions. These researchers established a distinction between genuine smiles (dubbed Duchenne smiles after French physician Guillaume Duchenne) and "false" smiles. Duchenne discovered that real grins not only rose the corners of the lips (which are readily faked), but also the cheek and eye muscles (much more difficult to fake).
