Case Study: Dawn, the sales representative

Dawn is the sales representative for a well known pharmaceutical company. Her job is to market existing and new products to doctors in the Gauteng area. She needs to visit the entire region once a month.

Sometimes she visits friends during working hours and then claims the kilometers covered for work purposes. Occasionally she entertains a friend at the company's expense as entertainment of clients. Even when they both only eat hamburgers, she claims the cost of a meal at an expensive restaurant. The time she spends visiting friends and around the kitchen table, she records as traveling time or work time on her timesheet.

Sometimes she agrees with a doctor's negative comments and remarks about the pharmaceutical company for which she works. A doctor in Pretoria offered her a few free consultations in exchange for expensive medication. Although she hesitated at first, she accepted the offer later when she caught a bad cold.

Dawn enjoys competition, so much so that she will alter purchase dates to push up the month's sales figures. She also takes part in organisational politics to achieve her own objectives. Sometimes she will stir up a whole group of people in order to oppose a particular decision.

A week ago she received an offer of work from a competitor, which she is now considering.
