CASE STUDY JIM DAVIES; SAME WORK, DIVERSE COLLEAGUES After completing orientation, Jim Davies is settling into his new office space. It is an open plan office, and there are about 14 other unfamiliar faces each in their own cubicle. At first glance, it is clear that this team of internal auditors are more diverse than at his previous employer. Surely, he thought, this would promote democratisation of the workplace. His 14 colleagues were roughly evenly divided into groups of Indians, Coloured and White people. There was even one person with a disability. There were enough females to comply with the employment laws. Jim was also pleasantly surprised to see that all age groups were well and truly represented. Other than that, not much was different: the same financial regulations and standard operating procedures applied. Clients wanted the same services; it was merely the name of the employer that changed. The companys logo is on one of the office walls and a water dispenser is strategically placed next to the door to the tearoom from which the smell of coffee is coming. About 30 minutes into work Jim hears loud noises in the corridors disrupting the silence. He watches his colleagues giggle as they walk down the aisles; each person falls in and starts clapping. He soon realises they are walking straight towards him!

An hour has passed, the cake is finished and all 14, now familiar, faces are back at their cubicles. He is going to struggle to remember each ones name, but they will remember his! Tradition has it that as the newcomer he must wear his welcome gift for a week: a tie with his name printed on it. With a smile Jim turns his attention to the orientation file and pages through the manuals and policies.
