Case Study Simons psychological contract

Simon was an HR professional. He had worked in several senior positions within commercial organisations prior to taking up a post at a university. During the early years Simon enjoyed a great deal of prestige and was even made a professor. Simon was also very well thought of by his professional body. The university entered a turbulent phase and there were several reorganisations. During the first reorganisation Simon applied for a managerial post which was given to a younger, much less experienced member of staff. At the next reorganisation Simon did not apply for the Head of Department post but was very supportive of the person who was eventually appointed. Simon was nevertheless always very sceptical of any suggested change, using citing a time when that change had been tried before and its subsequent negative consequences. Simon became optimistic again and applied for a post coordinating the various professional body qualifications. This seemed and ideal role for Simon given his links with the professional body. However, for political reasons the post was given to Derek, a junior member of staff. Eventually senior management were persuaded to make the post a joint one between Derek and Simon. Nevertheless, by now the final damage was done and shortly afterwards Simon took early retirement and moved away. When asked by his line manager to reconsider Simon said that he felt that the organization had 'constantly kicked him in the teeth'.
