CE Design Project Proposed Engineering Building
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to give students handson experience on designing and
sizing shallow foundations for a fourstory structure.
Project Description
The proposed Engineering building is a new fourstory structure to house offices, labs
and classrooms for the College of Engineering. The structural design consists of load
bearing reinforced masonry perimeter walls with interior steel columns and a slabon
grade floor. The perimeter walls have a design wall load of and are expected to
be supported on continuous spread footings. Interior columns consist of AISC
square steel tubing with a design load of kips and are expected to be supported on
square footings. The maximum allowable settlement for all foundations is inch.
Team Organization
Team will be selected and informed. Each team will have four members. Each team shall
select a project manager, who will be responsible for managing and coordinating the
group activities.
Engineering Analyses
Using the information given each group shall conduct appropriate engineering analyses
to evaluate the bearing capacity and settlement of the proposed footings, suitability of
existing surficial soil for support of slab on grade floor and pavements and earthwork
requirements for recompaction of existing materials.
Design
Based on the analyses, each team shall develop designs for the continuous and square
footings. These designs shall include: allowable bearing capacity, minimum width and
embedment depth of footings.
Written Report
Each team shall prepare a geotechnical report presenting the results of their work. Your
report must be prepared using a word processor or other computer software, be bound in
a suitable report folder, and have a professional appearance. This report is due on the
same day as your final exam for the class.
