Consider a construction site with the soil profile given below.
a. Calculate total vertical stress (z), pore water pressure (u), and vertical effective stress (z')
at layer interfaces. Groundwater table is 15 ft below the ground surface. Show your
calculations and tabulate your final results (Use the table format specified below).[5 points]
b. Next, calculate induced stresses (z) values within the soil profile due to construction of a
small building. Assume that the building rests on the ground surface. A plan dimension of
the building is 50ft50ft square. The contact pressure between building and soil at ground
level is 3600 psf. Use 2:1 method. [5 points]
c. Plot initial, induced, and final vertical effective stresses versus depth. Depth should be on
Y -axis on inverted scale (i.e. with depth increasing downward).[5 points]
d. Compute the total (x) and effective (x') horizontal stresses at a depth of 29 ft before the
building construction. [5 points]
