The Eastern NM Rural Water System, known as the Ute Pipeline, is a proposed project to pump 16,450 AF/yr from Ute Lake south & east to provide water for Clovis, Portales & points south (see map). The first step involves pumping the water from Ute Reservoir (elevation 3600ft) up over the top of the caprock (elevation 4,500ft) through a 17.5 mile pipeline. From there it will flow by gravity to a treatment plant and then to points south. Answer the following.
a. Assuming water is available only 8 months of the year, calculate the flow in cfs (i.e.16,450 AF/8 months).
b. To limit head losses the maximum allowable velocity is 5fts. Calculate the necessary pipe diameter, then round up to the nearest 0.5ft to get the pipe to be used in the rest of the problem.
c. Assuming ductile iron pipe calculate the head losses to the top of caprock.
d. Calculate pump head (ft)
e. Calculate hydraulic power in units of hp and KW.
f. Assuming a pump that is 85% efficient calculate the motor horsepower in units of hp and KW.
g. Assuming an average electric power cost of $0.07KWhr calculate the annual electric power cost to pump the water to the top of the caprock.
h. Assuming the average household uses 6,500 gal/month, what would be the monthly household water bill just to pay for pumping costs?
The flow and chlorine concentrations at a pipe junction are shown. Calculate Q4 and the chlorine concentrations in pipes 3 and 4 leaving the node.
