Geologically, it is a product compressional forces related to the building of the Rocky Mountains-these forces caused a gentle arching upward of the sedimentary rock layers in a region called the Colorado Plateau. The upwarping of these sedimentary rocks fractured and weakened them, bringing about erosion which is still going on today. The image on page 336 is a view eastward of the West Mitten Butte, East Mitten Butte (see the "thumbs"), and Merrick Butte; all three of these can be located on the following Mitten Buttes USGS topographic map and the Google Earth image of the same area. You will need to use the large topographic map provided to answer several of these questions. 1. What arid landscape term is used to describe the stream channels in this environment? 2.
