Chapter 9 talks, in broad terms, about two general schools of thought when it comes to managing businesses. One school of thought is ethical universalism, which believes that there are common definitions of right and wrong that cross multiple cultures, countries and religions. The other school of thought, ethical relativism, suggests that concepts of right and wrong vary according to cultures, religions, and behavioral norms.

Later in the chapter, the concepts of moral managers, amoral managers and immoral managers are introduced. Each type of manager, or management team, will react to ethical challenges based on their moral belief system.

For this weeks discussion, select a potential ethical challenge that you, as a manager of an athletic shoe company, might face in the manufacture, distribution, promotion and/or sale of your products. Keep in mind that many of you have chosen to produce and sell your shoes in foreign markets (e.g. Asia/Pacific, Latin America, Europe/Africa).

Once youve identified a potential ethical challenge (e.g. the use of child labor), describe how each type of manager (moral, amoral and immoral) might respond when faced with the challenge youve selected.
