CHEMICAL KINETICS POST-LAB ASSIGNMENT
The calculations are numerous and repetitive. You are encouraged to complete your calculations using
a spreadsheet program to hasten the process.
Graphs (submit graphs by stapling them behind your Post-Lab Worksheet)
Using a data analysis or spreadsheet program, generate three graphs so that you can determine
activation energies for the reaction with no additive, the reaction with silver ion, and the reaction with
copper ion. Your graphs must include captions (a scientific graph includes a descriptive caption of 1-2
sentences below the graph, rather than a title above the graph), correct axes, and appropriate labels
(including units). Also include the In k and 1T data used to make each graph. These graphs must be
created by you. Sharing of graphs is not permitted and represents a violation of the Honor Code, for
which the minimum result will be a zero for the lab.
Use the rate constants and temperatures from the experiments with no additives to make an
Arrhenius plot (In k vs.1/T).
Perform a linear regression, obtain the equation of the line in your Arrhenius plot, and
calculate the activation energy for the reaction with no additives. Display the line of best fit on
the graph of your data points. Show the equation of the line and the R2 value on your graph.
Repeat 1 and 2 above for graphs of the experiments with Cu2+ and Ag*.
Calculate the activation energy on each graph (show work). Convert to kJ. Niclaus

POST-LAB WORKSHEET
Caiculations (set-ups and answers) must contain the appropriate units and the carrect number of significant figures.
Use the average reaction times to calculate the reaction rate for each experiment at each temperature. Record reaction rates on the table on the following page. Make sure that you include the correct units for the reaction rate. Show a sample calculation for experiment 1. Record concentrations on the table on the following page. Show calculations for the first four experiments.

Use the rate law determined in the Week 2 Pre-Lab Questions to calculate the rate constant, k, for each experiment at each temperature. Record rate constants on the table on the following page. Show a sample calculation for experiment 1.
Explain the meaning of the activation energles obtained from this experiment. Support your response with your values for Ea in kl . In your assessment of catalysil, consider Ea and rate.
