1. Choose a Developmental Goal

   First, choose a developmental goal targeted at improving or developing leadership/management behaviors or attributes that we have studied in Mod 3.

   Note: The results of your 360 Feedback exercise will be helpful in identifying and articulating your goal. Additionally, you may draw from other sources to support your choice of goal, such as self-assessments, formal or informal feedback from colleagues and supervisors or performance reviews.

   Some possible goals might be to:

   • Improve your ability to effectively lead or manage a team.
   • Engage in difficult conversations productively.
   • Give or receive feedback.
   • Manage up and across the organization.
   • Develop specific aspects of your emotional intelligence or other leadership behaviors.

   Note: Do not select a goal such as improving your functional expertise (software, accounting, etc), getting promoted, or a new job. Those may be potential outcomes of your plan and may be discussed in your analysis. Your focus should be on how you will change or improve the behaviors or attributes you need to work on in order to get promoted, etc.

2. Write an Action Plan

   Once you have chosen your goal (or two related developmental goals as described above), simply state your goal at the top of the page (i.e., My developmental goal is)

   Then answer questions 1, 2, and 3, as explained below.

   Note: You do not need to include an introduction or conclusion.

   A sure way to demonstrate a deep understanding of Mod 3 concepts and frameworks is to integrate references to specific authors or readings in your narrative in answer to questions 1, 2, and 3 as explained below.

   • For instance, there might be a reading that emphasizes the importance of your specific goal in successful leaders. Likewise, you may want to include a quote from Mod 3 material that succinctly highlights your situation or supports one of your action steps.
   • Avoid littering the narrative with random references. It is more important to select just two or three references that speak to your specific situation.

   Questions

   1) Why does this goal matter given your current or potential organizational context?

   • Explain why this goal matters given your current or potential organizational context.
   • For example, how will this goal help you perform effectively and grow given the specific characteristics of your current company and its values (or the company you want to work for in the future)?
   • Use data from formal or informal feedback you have received to support the choice of your goal (e.g.: self-assessments, 360 Feedback, Quad members, and/or supervisor.)

   • A successful submission will answer the questions above and execute the following:

     Your goal

   • You choose a goal that is developmental (i.e., specific behaviors or attributes related to leadership and management that you wish to improve) and can be achieved over the course of 12 months.
   • You contextualize your goal by explaining why it is important to your leadership and management effectiveness given the specifics of your current or planned organizational context.
   • You reference data from formal or informal feedback you have received (e.g.: self-assessments, 360Feedback, Quad members, and/or supervisor) to support the choice of your goal.

   • Your action plan

   • You provide a specific, measurable, actionable plan that leads towards your goal over 12 months.
   • You break down the plan into manageable lengths of time for each step (e.g.: Weeks 8-12 or Months 1-3.)
   • You include strategies for remaining accountable to your plan.
   • You carefully analyze why a particular challenge might arise and explain how and why your suggested approach to managing the challenge would help.
