In a small gantry for unloading goods from a railway wagon, it is proposed to carry the lifting tackle on a steel joist (240mm by 100mm, as shown in Figure 1(b)) weighing 0.32kNm, supported on a 5m span. The equivalent dead load on the joist due to the load to be raised is P=30kN and this may act at any point of the middle 4m as shown in Figure 1(a). The allowable bending stress and the allowable shear stress for the steel are 115MPa and 75MPa, respectively. Show by appropriate calculation whether the joist is suitable for the job.
