Client/server computing splits data and processing tasks into two main partitions: Servers handle the data while clients handle the processing. Cloud computing takes things a step further through the use of web-based client applications. In a web-based model, end users run browser software to create the user interface.

Cloud computing and the web-based model are increasing in popularity with organizations of all types, but client/server computing still has its place in the workplace.
