Communication Failures in Business

Introduction:

This exercise is designed to help assess your ability to tackle complex problems in a group environment and arrive at commercially sound and professional solutions.

Project Description:

In today's business environment people communicate with each other via conference calls, email, instant messaging, meetings, memos, texts, tweets, video chats and more. While communication is essential and should be a priority for an organization, it is often taken for granted. There are challenges and issues both management and employees experience and have to overcome in order ensure that the lines of communication remain open and effective. Poor communication is often a symptom of other organizational problem but it is important that dependable communication structures are in place. If not present, communication failures can cost millions of dollars per year and can lead to organizational downfalls.

Select a company that has or is currently experiencing communication failures. Pressure has come from the CEO to 1) address the issue(s) identified, 2) identify communication best practices, and 3) develop a proposal to implement a sustainable communication framework.

Your group is expected to assess the communication issues being faced and provide sound rationale behind your groups proposed recommendations. Introducing a new idea can be more successful when key people in the organization "buy" into the concept. SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable / Achievable, Relevant, Time-oriented) objectives must also be considered. Convincing others to support your idea requires persuasive communication skills. Persuading others that your solution will be successful requires that you have a unique idea, and that you have researched its feasibility.

The management team is placing the responsibility on your group to determine a recommendation for their consideration. They are not looking for a group that just assumes that addressing communication issues does not much effort or that communication only comes from the top. They are looking for the team to provide honest feedback and notify them if addressing the issues or developing a new communication framework is not warranted providing that the rationale and research supporting why is depicted.

The project consists of two major parts: Business Proposal and video presentation. You will work in a team to develop an Communication Framework proposal and produce a thoroughly researched, well written PowerPoint proposal, and video presentation.

The proposal must be well researched using reliable and valid resources (e.g. peer reviewed articles, valid websites, actual company information, etc.).
