Company A manufactures shafts made from fibre-reinforced polymer composites using pultrusion process. Recently, a new customer requested a new shaft to be developed for a special application with tensile strength specification of 185 ± 15 N/mm2. Some existing customers have been making complaints of the pultruded composite shafts having low tensile strength. Some product returns were also received by the company. Management however seems reluctant to invest money to make improvement to the process and quality system practised by the company. You recently joined Company A as the Quality Assurance Engineer. As one of your initiatives, you suggested the use of process control charts to monitor and control the process of making the shafts. Table 1 gives the tensile strengths of shafts developed for the new customer collected by your Quality Improvement Team in the initial process performance study.
