Soil formation is influenced by climate, organisms, relief, parent material, and time (referred to as the CLORPT factors). Soil offers a medium of growth to plants, a home for an enormous number of organisms, and has an active role in the planet's water and nutrient cycle. Soil is essentail because it provides the necessary nutrients for plant, as well as regulates water flow, and acts as a habitat for many organisms.
