You are a shift supervisor in charge of admissions in a regional hospital near Augusta, GA. One of the admitting clerks on your shift, Rhonda, has been worrying you lately. She saunters down the hall, works slowly, and has a poor personal appearance. She also seems bored or depressed much of the time and does her job without enthusiasm or in a routine manner. You've noticed the effect Rhonda has on the families of patients being admitted and the other admitting clerks. Even your department head has remarked about Rhonda's attitude and performance.

You've decided that Rhonda needs some motivation. You call Rhonda into a conference room to talk. You want to discover what the problem is and to figure out a way to motivate Rhonda. You ask her what is wrong and she replies:

When I graduated from Augusta State two years ago, I was really looking forward to a career in the health care field. I knew I'd have to start out doing mundane tasks, but felt that as soon as my true capabilities were recognized; I'd be given more challenging work. Now I see things differently. I'm stuck on the same job assignment as when I hired in. It seems pretty routine to me. I'm not very excited about coming to work and that even getting up for work is a chore lately. There's got to be something better out there.
