A further education college has recently fallen victim to a series of cyber security attacks. In the first of the attacks, particular segments of the college network experienced intermittent outages. This was initially thought to be related to recent changes to the network infrastructure within the college. The most significant of the attacks was, however, found to be an application layer attack that brought prolonged disruption to the college intranet and staff database, which had a subsequent effect on the college payroll system.

After a lengthy computer forensics investigation that involved the capture and analysis of a mobile device and network traffic, as well as analysis of CCTV footage, the perpetrator was found to be a disgruntled member of IT staff. The individual was subsequently charged under the Computer Misuse Act and dismissed from the college.
