Consider a spring (or think of it as a block from a spring mattress) and a block cut out from a memory foam mattress (see figure below). Now imagine you "instantaneously" apply a load P to the material in each case and measure the material deform. In this case instantaneously would imply you go from 0 to P in no time (of course this is a theoretical construct that cannot happen in reality). After a period of "t" seconds, the load P is instantaneously removed. Based on this information and your conceptual understanding of how materials behave prepare the following sketches qualitatively: 1. Load versus time from 0 to some time after the load is removed, say 2t 2. Deformation of the spring versus time from time 0 to 2t 3. Deformation of the memory foam material from time 0 to 2t
