Business Cards- A stranger approaches you in the hospital parking lot and identifies himself as a lawyer who would like to help people and he would like to give you some of his business cards to hand out to patients who are not happy with their medical treatment; he tells you he will pay you a fee for each patient who comes to his office with a card that you have handed out. Confidential Tests- Your neighbor and best friend of several years tells you she needs a confidential lab test done; she is concerned she might have picked up something with a little 'fling' she had while her husband was out of town and she would just die if he found out; could you arrange a quiet and confidential test for sexually transmitted diseases? Elevator Discussion- You are riding on an elevator with two other nurses and a lady who is not part of the hospital staff; you hear the nurses discussing Ms. Jones, one of your patients, and one says to the other, "Well, Jones in 312 was here for endometriosis last year. Now she gets an oophorectomy. I'm not surprised." When you get off on your floor, the other lady gets off also; when the elevator goes up, she turns to you and says, Ms. Jones is my sister. Were they talking about her in public?" What is the most appropriate action for you to take and why?
