Communication can look different, on the interscholastic level. As an Athletic Director certain times side conversations are necessary in the industry. Side conversations can be useful and not always reflect a negative tone. Misinformation is a hurdle to side conversations as everyone may have a different interpretation of information. $($Gardner & Peterson, $2019)$ This can happen both internally and externally.

Recently, a school that I have scheduled with in previous years had a change in athletic leadership. Often this can result in miscommunication on games, locations, or officials' assignments. The new AD was under the impression they would be hosting our soccer game. In a side conversation, prior to the previous AD leaving we discussed my school hosting the game. Unfortunately, I was not aware if the AD noted our side conversation.

I have spoken to many people in the athletic industry, and many have communicated that side conversations at times have affected relationships. I have worked hard to limit side conversations in my industry and communicate via email, to keep consistency. Side conversations at times can cause confusion in the workplace. However, when conducted properly side conversations can also be enormously valuable. $($Gardner$,2019)$ Internally when necessary appropriate side conversations can benefit the team. This happens when conversations that may not have been openly discussed begin to be openly discussed because of certain side conversations. This creates dialogue in my industry.
