Your thesis statement is the cornerstone of your analysis and "Sentence Zero" for the whole of your essay: it holds your paper together and shows your reader where your paper is going to go. If you construct a good thesis, you can subsequently construct a good introductory paragraph. And with a good introductory paragraph, you outline the rest of your paper, helping you construct a quality essay. A thesis statement: Defines the paper's argument Introduces the kinds of evidence or reasoning that will be used to back up the argument Outlines the main points you'll address in your paper and the basic relationship between these points (and only the main pointsit does not cover points that you will not address in your paper) Is specific, explicit, and direct Can be more than one sentence and often needs to be, if it's detailed enough

Choose one of the two topics below and devise an essay you might write that interrogates and explores this concept further. Write only the first, opening paragraph of that essay, introducing your argument. (Of course, an introductory paragraph to a real essay should also outline the main points you'll address in your paper and the basic relationship between these points, but for this current assignment, you may leave this out.) Your paragraph must include a solid thesis statement that:

• Defines the paper's argument
• Introduces the kinds of evidence or reasoning that will be used to back up the argument
• Is specific, explicit, and direct

Topic 1 - Address and take a position on a key concern about the application of big data in media production

Topic 2 - Choose one television or radio channel, movie or video game production company, or music label, and analyze what kind of brand identity it is trying to create for itself

Note: don't just repeat marketing language. Analyze: papers reading like PR will lose points.
