Ethics and Fudging Travel Reimbursements

Jack, landed a dream summer accounting internship. He would be working with many of the movers and shakers in a company and getting to travel with them to many foreign countries. Of course, the company pays for all the travel and travel-related expenses. The drawback was that many of Jacks trips were got to go now trips. As a result, he constantly had to cancel and/or reschedule personal and professional meetings, which did not please her family, friends, and colleagues.

Recently, Jack traveled to Tokyo, Japan, and stayed there for five days. The team worked many hours and were very pleased with their results.

While traveling for business all staff are allowed a per diem of a maximum of $150 per day for food and $100 per day for incidental expenses for such things as local transportation, tips, snacks, etc. The accommodations were billed directly to the company.

To Jacks surprise, the food and incidental expenses in Tokyo were much less than he had expected so he thought, why not? As a result, he fudged her actual food expenses from $50 per day to $150 per day and her actual incidental expenses from $60 per day to $100 per day. Jack did some quick math and smiled. Her fudging resulted in her overstating her expenses by $700 for this five-day trip. He thought, great, extra spending money!

Jack was confident that no one would question her about her daily expense reports because he heard that everyone else did it too. Also, he thought he deserved to be bonused for all of her hard work.
