Contract Law Problem Question
Sami has taken a gap year before beginning university. She is confident that she has found two ways to raise money that will help her to pay for course expenses.
Nine months ago, she made an agreement with her grandmother that she would stop boasting about her A-level grades, and to give her grandmother's dog "two enjoyable walks a day" every day for six months. In return, her grandmother promised to pay her 350. She dutifully kept her end of the bargain. However, her grandmother has not given her any money.
Six months ago, she noticed that her neighbour's back garden was looking untidy. Since then, she has been letting herself into the garden twice a week through a gap in the shared hedge. Using her own tools, she has completely transformed the garden into a beautiful, well-maintained space. Last week, she knocked on the neighbour's door, and asked him what he thought of her work. He said that he was very pleased, and agreed that it would have cost him hundreds to hire a professional gardener to do the same work. Sami suggested that he should pay her 300, but he shut the door in her face.
Three weeks ago, she found her neighbour's budgie and brought it back to the neighbour's house. On her way home, she saw that the neighbour had put up posters and was offering 500 to anyone who finds his budgie. Sami now believes that she is entitled to receive this reward, although the neighbour denies this.
Advise Sami as regards any contractual claims she can bring against her grandmother and her neighbour.
