1. Suppose that a company needs to purchase a pipe with specifications that it resists 2,400 pounds per linear foot. The manufacturer must demonstrate that it meets the specifications. In other words, we want to decide if the average strength of the pipes exceeds 2,400 pounds per linear foot.

a. State the null hypothesis: Ho and the alternative hypothesis Ha for this case.

b. Compute the test statistic, z, to determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis, Ho, based on the following information.

A sample of 50 tubes is taken for testing. The average resistance was x = 2,500 pounds with deviation s = 200 pounds. It is desired to use an alpha of .05 (Z.05 = 1.645) to make the determination.
