Could you please help me with this?
Instructions
- Look over the pass requirements, layout, example and tips sections below (to get a better idea of what you have to do).
- Open new word.doc (or equivalent) and within it write argument (in line with the layout and example sections). You may choose any argument for your main claim, providing they fulfil the pass requirements indicated below.
- Save your work (so you have a copy), then copy and paste it into the relevant test in the "Assignments" section in INTERACT.
- If you receive zero for this assessment do not be alarmed (it is very common). It is just a placeholder mark which allows you to try again (it doesn't mean your work is worth zero). Just go into "My Grades" in the subject INTERACT site and click on the zero mark, you will see the feedback you need to resubmit.
Pass Requirements
In order for your work to be deemed satisfactory, markers must be assured that (in regard to your work) the answers to the following questions are "yes":
- Has an argument been presented (i.e. reasons for why something is true)?
- Is the argument presented in standard form (i.e. number of premises and conclusion and a conclusion indicator)?
- Is the conclusion of the argument identical to the main claim?
- Is the argument presented only a main argument (i.e. it does not contain a complex argument with sub-arguments)?
- Are the premises and conclusion appropriately worded (e.g. contain one complete sentence, concise and simply put, not questions, etc.)?
- Is the argument valid (i.e. if the premises are true, MUST the conclusion be true)?
- Does the argument employ uniform language (i.e. uses the same language through-out; e.g. if one premise was "Smoking is bad for your health" it doesn't have another premise reading "If smoking causes health problems then I should not smoke")?
- Does the argument have appropriate premises (e.g. the conclusion is not also a premise, and the premises are not highly controversial [e.g. God exists] etc.)?
Layout

Examples
We have supplied 3 examples below, but you should only submit 1 argument for this assessment.

Tips
- Although there is word limit this is only a maximum. Please don't feel that you have to write close to the maximum. Just try to write clearly and succinctly - far fewer words is fine (words for the sake of a word count are words not worth wasting).
- If you're having trouble formulating an argument for your main claim, try expressing it in the "discussions" tool in INTERACT - perhaps your peers can help. Or consult with your teacher, who has a good deal of experience in helping to formulate arguments.
- Remember that your textbook has chapters on writing arguments in standard form and planning your essay - trying reading these chapters again if you are struggling.
- If you really can't think of a good argument for your main claim, remember that you are allowed to change your claim. Just make sure it is suitable - that is, it answers an interesting/important question, and it is something you can provide a good argument for.
